The Particulars

Written & Directed by Matthew MacKenzie // Choreography by Alida Kendell

Smart, strange, and stirring in all the right ways.
— The New York Times

The Particulars is the darkly funny and subtly powerful story of one insomniac’s struggle to maintain a daily routine in the face of a home invasion.

Performed as a fusion of dance and theatre, Gordon battles his invaders on two main fronts — in his home, where he believes he is dealing with a vermin infestation, and in his yard, where insects have invaded his garden.

By day, Gordon forges systematically ahead, assiduously in control of every aspect of his life. But by night, the scratching which he has begun to hear in his walls is unravelling him, driving Gordon to the edge of cosmic desperation.

Edmonton Métis playwright Matthew MacKenzie is fast becoming one of our most compelling writers.
— Martin Morrow, The Globe & Mail’s Top 10 Theatre Productions of 2019

Theatre critics across Canada and in New York have been unanimous in their praise for The Particulars. Called “Smart, strange and stirring,” by the New York Times, “profound” by nytheatre.com, and “a revelation” by the Montréal Gazette.

The Particulars entices you with its details, but it’s the exploration of life’s biggest mysteries that will break your heart.

I was in awe of this master of words and incredible visionary, the brilliant and extraordinary Indigenous writer and director Matthew MacKenzie…

The real enthralling part was the words. Rarely have I had the privilege to listen to someone where every word counts and every facial expression, every movement and every breath have been constructed for me as a member of the audience.
